Since it was Johan’s treat, I let him order. He got us a combination of sashimi and sushi, along with shochu for him and umeshu for me. Mizu’s food and service were as good as I remembered, and Johan looked like he thoroughly enjoyed himself. We didn’t rush at all through dinner and by the time we finished, it was past ten and I was a bit tipsy, being the lightweight I was.

On the train home, I snoozed on Johan’s shoulder; he didn’t seem to mind. From Sturhville Train Station, we had to walk down a dark street. We were strolling along when Johan grabbed my hand. I gave in for a beat. Then I realized what I was doing and pulled away. We were nearing our place when Johan dragged me toward an alleyway between two buildings. He was yanking hard, and I was too tipsy to resist. He pushed me to the wall and said, “I’ve just got to have you,” before mashing his lips against mine. My brain told me to fight, but my heart surrendered, and his lips were too sweet for me not to give in. We made out for quite a bit until he had to break away to breathe. My brain took the chance to command my body and I pushed him away.

“What are you doing?” I didn’t wait for an answer and took long strides toward home, wanting to be nowhere else but in my room.

Johan caught up before I unlocked the door. It seemed like Lachlan was already home.

He was in the lounge room when I walked in. “Where in the world have you two been? I was wo—”

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. So sorry.” I broke into sobs and threw myself into his arms. I lost control and kept apologising. I just hoped he didn’t notice the puffiness on both of our lips.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay.” Lachlan started rubbing my back. “It’s okay. I was just worried, because you are both family to me. There wasn’t any message left, and I was about to send you a text when you walked through the door.”

“We were in the city and decided to have dinner before coming back,” I heard Johan say behind me. “Celebrating Guy’s first paycheck as a writer.”

I could feel Lachlan nodding against me. “Congrats, Guy.” He pulled us apart. “Though I’d like to be part of the celebration. I’m really happy for you. We should have wine and cheese tonight.”

“I’m smashed.” I grinned at Lachlan, glad what had happened between Johan and me wasn’t detected. “Maybe tomorrow. You think you’ll be home early then?”

“Of course. I’ll make sure of it.” I could sense Lachlan’s excitement. “Maybe we should do hotpot tomorrow night. I’m sure Johan hasn’t tried it before.”

Without finding out Johan’s response, I started toward the bedroom. “Sure, whatever you guys decide.” I needed to be in my haven. I closed the door.

EXCEPT TO EAT the hotpot, which Lachlan prepared, I didn’t really get out of my room the next day; except for the essentials of shower, toilet, and Coke.
